In 1992, the owners of S&B acquired Hungarian Optical Works (MOM), a government-owned manufacturer of precision optics located in Budapest, Hungary. Seeing a rise in demand, the main factory was expanded to increase the production capacity and the manpower was increased to 40 workers in 1988. The first scope with variable magnification, 1¾-6×36 was unveiled in 1974, and the company received an order for a total of 500 6×32 rifle scopes from the Finnish army in 1978. Initially, the workshop was set in a small laundry room in Biebertal-Fellingshausen with minimal tools and most production operations were carried out manually. Schmidt & Bender was founded as a small workshop in 1957 by two instrument makers, Helmut Schmidt, and Helmut Bender.
